Kicking a smoking habit is not easy. Tobacco can be highly addictive and some smokers find it difficult to just give up the mere habit of smoking. But if you put your mind to it, you can definitely be rid of your smoking habit once and for all. Here is a list of tips that will help you on your journey: 

Do Use a Nicotine Replacement Therapy  

Some people find it beneficial to quit smoking abruptly. With others however, cold turkey doesn’t work. Whether you decide to stop suddenly or gradually ease your habit is up to you. Research has shown that both methods are equally effective. In any case, you might want to use a form of nicotine replacement therapy, or NRT.  Nicotine dependence is not easy to shake off. NRTs include skin patches, chewing gum, nasal spray, or inhalers that deliver a medication that help you control your nicotine dependency. You can consult with a doctor regarding which type of NRT is best for you.  

Consider Alternative Therapies 

The hardest part of quitting smoking is making up your mind about it. You might decide to give up the habit today, only to find yourself relapsing next week. In some ways you might keep telling yourself “I’ll quit,” without ever actually getting to it. If NRTs having a minimal effect on your, you can also consider alternative therapies. Sometimes, it helps when you have fellow travellers to rely on when quitting smoking. It’s highly recommended to seek counselling so you can minimise the risk of a relapse. At counselling, you might be able to find sponsors and other former smokers whose stories of quitting for good might inspire you. If it’s becoming difficult to do it on your own, counselling can become an immense help.  


Exercise is known to have positive effects on a body that spends most time of the day in a sedentary position. If you are getting the jitters craving nicotine, start exercising to feel better. Exercise can be a very healthy distraction as well.  

Use Anti-Nicotine Drugs 

Smokers can get prescription strength medication that counteract the effects of nicotine to help kick the habit. The two most well-known of these medications are bupropion and varenicline. These drugs can reduce cravings and lessen the effects of withdrawal symptoms. You can ask your doctor if it would be appropriate for you to take these drugs to quit smoking.  

Try Behavioural Therapy 

Smoking is a habit. If you want to quite the cigs, then you need to change your behaviour. And that is never easy for any human. Behavioural therapy can ease your psychological dependence on nicotine and the act of smoking itself. While drugs can easily take care of the body’s physical dependence on smoking, the mental dependence is up to you to tackle. Behavioural therapy is a specific type of counselling that directly address this aspect of habitual smoking.  

Try one or two of the above. Keep in mind that what matters most is to keep trying. You may relapse, but try again and again until you quit smoking for good.
